This scene depicts one of the issues encountered when trying to fix the Blow Off Preventer (BOP) at the Macando oil well after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. In order to add a functionshing BOP to the existing failed BOP the top half of the unit must be removed, but due to bent pipes and internal damage this was not possible.
